Woodland Management Plans

Almost all woodland in the UK has been managed at some time in the past either for timber, charcoal, fire wood or hunting or a combination of those things. All current woodland owners will have their own priorities for their woodland which may be conservation, recreation or timber production.

Incorporating our knowledge and experience in forestry and conservation, Hillside Trees can draw up plans which ensure that the woodland is managed in a  sympathetic and sustainable manner and can recommend reputable local contractors to carry out the work.

Hedgerow Management Plans

Many hedgerows have been neglected over recent years and it can be quite a job to bring back an overgrown tangle of shrubs and trees into a recognisable hedgerow. Hillside Trees has expertise in creating management plans for hedgerows which will restore the hedge both as a functional, attractive boundary and as a rich habitat for wildlife.

Protected Trees

Did you know that if your property lies within a Conservation Area you need to give notice to the Local Planning Authority if you want to do any work to your trees? And that for trees covered by Tree Preservation Orders (TPO’s) you need to apply for permission? This includes pruning for aesthetic as well as for safety reasons and of course complete removal of trees.

Hillside Trees can advise you on any necessary work and produce a professional report to justify the decision. The report can then be used as part of the notification or application for permission and we can of course do the notification / application for you.

Once you have the go-ahead for the work we can put you in touch with reputable tree surgeons to carry out the work to the required British Standard.

Tree Health and Safety

Is my tree safe? This is a question that many people ask, and whilst it is impossible to say with certainty that a tree is completely safe, Hillside Trees can undertake detailed surveys of individual trees which will identify any visible defects which may compromise their safety.

A tree health survey will look at the following:
  • The structural condition of the tree. Are there any inherent weaknesses which may make the tree unsafe?
  • Pests and diseases. Are there any pathogens present or any pests damaging the tree?
  • The presence of fungi. Some, but by all means not all fungi can damage trees and make them unsafe. If a fungus is found, Hillside Trees will tell you which type it is, and advise an appropriate course of action.
  • Evidence of decay. Many old trees have cavities in them which may have some decay. A degree of rot within a tree does not automatically mean that the tree is unsafe, and Hillside Trees will tell you if there is cause for concern and can commission further internal examinations if they deem it necessary.
  • External factors which may be damaging the tree

Hillside Trees will include management recommendations as part of any health and safety report and can put you in touch with reputable local tree surgeons to carry out the recommended works to the required British Standard.
