Trees & Planning

Hillside Trees offers extensive knowledge of the planning system as it relates to trees both from an ‘insider’ point of view from Alister’s time working in Local Authority Planning Departments and from 20 plus years consultancy.

Tree Surveys

Planning regulations state that where there are trees with a stem diameter of 75mm or greater on or adjacent to a potential building site, a tree survey to British Standard 5837:2012 must accompany any planning application.

The tree report will consist of the following 3 elements:
  • Preliminary survey and creation of an Arboricultural Impact Assessment Plan. This ‘AIA’ plan shows the constraints that the trees pose on the potential development by showing where the roots of the trees are likely to be and an indication of their crown spreads. The AIA will therefore assist with the formation of the plan for the site
  • Arboricultural Impact Assessment Report and Tree Protection Plan to demonstrate that the implications of the proposed development in relation to the arboricultural and landscape value of the trees on the site have been fully considered
  • Arboricultural Method Statement which gives a step by step guide to how trees will be protected during and after the construction project.

Landscape Plans

Often a Local Planning Authority will require new planting in mitigation for any trees lost as a result of development work. Hillside Trees can draw up the plans for such schemes including tree species and location, and specifications for planting and aftercare.
